Creating, Setting Up and Using Matching Remote Views

A matching remote view is a remote view that has the same fields and parameters as a local view.

When you want to prototype and/or test a client-server application with local data before deploying the application, VPM Enterprise provides special “Local To Remote” functionality to assist you.

You use local views during development to define view and view field properties in the Data Builder. You prototype and test using the local views.

When you are ready to test and deploy your application using remote data, you create matching remote views with the same fields and parameters as the local views. In the Data Builder, you tell your application to begin using the matching remote views instead of the local views. The remote views then use the Data Builder view and field properties that you set up for the local views. This saves you the chore of setting up view and field properties for the matching remote views.

Ø To create, set up and use a matching remote view

1.   Create Matching Local View: Create a local view that has the same name, same fields and same parameters as the matching remote view will have. Define view and field properties for the local view in the Data Builder. The remote view you create will use the local view's Data Builder properties.

2.   Create Matching Remote View: Follow steps 1. through 9. of the preceding “Creating and Setting Up Remote Views” section to create the matching remote view. You do not need to do steps 10. through 14. because the matching remote view will use the index tags, view properties, primary key designation, Referential Integrity setup and field properties of its matching local view.

3.   Build Forms: Use the matching local view in the Data Environment to build the forms that the remote view will eventually use.

4.   Identify and Turn on Matching Remote View: When you are ready to start using the remote view to access the remote data, identify and turn on the remote view by filling in the information on the Edit page in the Data Builder for the matching local view. See the next section for the details
