Field Help

Select a field on the Data Builder List page, click the Edit page, then click the Help page to to enter field-level help text.

Enter the text to be displayed when a user edits a field and presses F3 or selects Help from the right-click menu.

Tip: When you are entering field help text, you can use the shortcut key combination Alt-N to move to the next field in a table, view or CursorAdapter and Alt-P to move to the previous field.

The Help text that you enter is stored in the Field Help table, SDATADDFH.DBF.

When a user edits a field and presses F3 or selects Help from the right-click shortcut menu, the help text you enter is displayed in a field help window as shown in the illustration below. The window title bar contains the field label. If you haven’t entered a label for a field, the title bar contains the field name.

Since the help text is available when a user edits a field, your help text should aid the user in entering data into the field. An explanation of the field’s purpose plus any rules governing the data the user can enter would be appropriate.

If you include the VPM Enterprise Data Manager in an application, users of the application can access the Help page to enter useful notations about a field to aid them in data entry.

F3 Edit Permission

Users of your application can be given permission to edit the F3 help text when it is displayed from a form. If a user has the permission to edit F3 field-level help on a form, the user can press Alt-F3 to display the field help window. The user can then enter and modify the help text for a field while editing the field on the form. See Users to learn how to give a user the permission to edit F3 help while editing a form.
