The New Update option on the Update Builder menu displays the New Update form where the update directory is specified that will contain the files to be distributed.
The default update directory suggested by VPME is located on the same directory level as the project directory and is given the project directory name followed by “_UPDATEn” where n represents the number of the update that is about to be created for the application. For example, the first update you create for an application is given the number “1”, the second update is given the number “2”, and so on.
When you click the Create button, the update directory is created if it doesn’t already exist. Then, the Data Update Definition tables (SAppUpdT and SAppUpdF) and the Update Utility EXE (SAppUpd) are automatically copied to the update directory if they don’t already exist in the update directory or if the version in the update directory has an older date or time.
An installer program will be run in the last step of the update creation process to create installation files from the files in this update directory.
Important Tip: You can run the New Update option repeatedly to create new update directories. You should be aware though that the Copy Files option on the Update Builder menu always copies files to the last update directory you have created, and the Enter Data Update Rules option always works with the Data Update Definition tables in the last update directory you have created. The lesson here is that you should not run the New Update option until you are finished with the packaging of your current update and ready to create a subsequent update.
